University towns student accommodation shortage

As students head off to university over the coming weeks, new research from CB Richard Ellis reveals that there is a still a shortfall of appropriate accommodation in many of the UK’s most prestigious university towns.

The popularity of Russell Group Universities, such as London, Edinburgh and Bath, coupled with a shortage of suitable development sites in these historic towns, suggest that the supply and demand imbalance is likely to persist.

Top end buyers stand firm on prices

As more property comes onto the market and top end buyers refuse to pay over the odds, Prime property price rises have halted across most of the country.

The August Primelocation.com Prime Index reveals that, following four months of healthy growth, the average price of a UK Prime property slipped 0.3% to £457,052, while the average value of a Prime Platinum UK property is now £638,366, a fall of 0.4%.

 

July house prices up 0.4 per cent since June

The July data from Land Registry's flagship House Price Index shows an annual price increase of 6.7 per cent which takes the average property value in England and Wales to £166,798.

The monthly change from June to July is an increase of 0.4 per cent.

 

Pickles: Fair deal for travelling and settled communities

Travellers who play by the rules will get the same rights as other mobile home residents and could benefit from more authorised sites under plans announced by Communities and Local Government Secretary Eric Pickles.

At the same time, top-down Whitehall planning rules on travellers which Ministers believe has undermined community cohesion and harmed the countryside will be scrapped.

 

Saxon window discovery throws light on the past

Repair work at St Andrew's Church, Boxford in Berkshire has revealed one of the earliest intact timber windows in the country – a frame complete with a hinged wooden panel dating from the Saxon period.

Not only does the intriguing discovery prove that this attractive church on the banks of the River Lambourn is far older than previously suspected, but it also allows St Andrews to lay claim to having the oldest working wooden window in England.

 

Rents rise further in buoyant lettings market

The lettings market remains buoyant, as increased tenant demand and a shortage of properties pushes rents higher.

26 per cent more chartered surveyors reported a rise in demand for property rather than a fall, which was the second consecutive quarter that lettings demand has risen at a pace above the long run average.

The latest RICS Construction Market Survey shows that Northern Ireland is the UK region with the largest number of construction sector chartered surveyors experiencing declining workloads.

 

SNP deliver 30 year low cost homes record

The SNP Government is helping deliver more low cost homes than at any time since the early 1980's, official figures have confirmed.

Between July 2009 and June 2010 there were 5,337 housing association and council flats and houses completed across Scotland, the second highest figure since 1982, and only exceeded by last year's record numbers.

 

Council takes possession of tenant’s property

Birmingham County Court has granted an anti social behaviour injunction (ASBI) against a council tenant and granted Birmingham City Council an outright possession order of her home, bringing an end to her reign of drunken, disorderly and abusive behaviour that has blighted the lives of Northfield residents.

Julie Davis (42), of Hoggs Lane, Northfield was evicted from her home yesterday and handed down an ASBI, which barrs her from entering Hoggs Lane, Dimsdale Road.
